Carl Mason wins the OKI Open de España Senior by Cleveland / SrixonII by 4 Shots to become the most successful player ever to play on the European Senior Tour, surpassing the previous record set by Tommy Horton.....
Carl Mason has won his 24th European Senior Tour title to become the most successful senior player. Mason equaled Tommy Horton with his 23rd victory in Switzerland during 2010 but the victory at El Valle Golf Resort in Murcia has ensured his place in the record books. In truth, the 57 year old Englishman never looked under pressure. Sitting 1 shot behind after the first round, Mason held a 4 shot lead going into the third and final round.
There were some impressive performances on the final days play with John Harrison and Eamonn Darcy both shooting 66 to secure Top 10 finish. A 65 from George Ryall secured outright second place and a superb 64 from Bobby Lincoln took the South African 20 places up the Leaderboard into a tie for 5th.
Here's how the Tournament unfolded:
Day 1: A bogey free round from Bob Cameron was arguably the pick of the bunch picking up 2 Birdies on the Front Nine and 3 more on the way in.
Bill Longmuir carded an impressive 8 Birdies in a round which also saw the Scot pick up 3 Bogeys, notably missing makeable Putts on 12 and 13. One shot back on 4 under were John Harrison and the prolific European Tour winner Carl Mason.
Putting seemed to be at the forefront of players minds after Day 1 and with only 4 shots covering the Top 20 the Putter could well be key on Day 2, moving day!
Day 2: Sitting 1 shot back after Day1, Carl Mason produced a dazzling 65, 6 under Par to lead the field by one at 10 under Par going into the final Round.
Mason equaled Tommy Hortons record 23 Senior Tour wins last year in Switzerland. A first win during 2011 at El Valle would see Mason make history with his 24th success.
His nearest challenger is Bill Longmuir who carded another impressive round of 67 after a first 66 to sit one shot back on 9 under Par. An impressive Tournament so far for Longmuir, given the recent changes to his swing.
Bob Cameron is 4 off the lead back in third place with David Merriman 6 shots off the lead in fourth.
With five players tied on 3 under Par, Mason is surely the man to beat going into the final round.
Day 3: Was all about Carl Mason and a Bogey free Front Nine extended his lead to 6 shots over Bill Longmuir, who would eventually finish 3rd behind George Ryall. Despite a Bogey on the 12th, Mason was able to cruise to a historic victory.
The winning margin of 4 shots was testament to an impressive Tournament which saw Mason drop only 2 Shots over the three Rounds. The Winning Score: 67, 65, 68: Total 200.
Congratulations to Carl Mason and congratulations to El Valle Golf Resort.
