Despite the numerous golf courses available in the Murcia region, Aguilon golf resort, just over the border in Almeria shines out as a beacon for what golf is all about and the extra travelling is more than worth it.
The course is set in the mountains and is a real challenge. As you approach, two things stand out - the scenery and the lush, greeness of the course.
There are no vast areas of grit to be seen and the fairways ramble over natural features not artificial humps and bumps. Making it appear as if only the bunkers have been added to the landscape.
Unless you can hit the ball a long way it is better to play off the blue tees but if you are accurate there are places to aim for on the fairway.
Every tee that you reach the view gives you with the 'wow' factor. Mountains on the one side and the sea in the distance on the other. It is the sort of course that you would be happy to walk around without your clubs!
The short, par three holes demand accuracy if you are to find your ball again and the par fives require long, straight shots if you are going to score. The par five eighteenth from the white tees must put the 'fear of god' into hardened professionals.
Jose, the manager and his staff are absolutely brilliant. They are always pleased to see you, nothing is too much trouble and they are friendly. hardworking and efficient.
Our society always gets excellent green fee deals and Jose replies to e-mails promptly, unlike some of the widely advertised golf course chains that will remain nameless.
The clubhouse facilities certainly do not compare with the grand, impersonal 'mausoleums' that other courses can offer but they are perfectly acceptable.
The practice facilities are not going to win any prizes either but the course itself more than makes up for this.
Fuente Old Guard Golf Society love playing at this course. Their only regret is that it is not closer to Fuente Alamo!
