Hacienda Del Alamo Club Champion and course record holder John Green has turned professional at age 52 and will play on a selection of Professional tours throughout the 2008 season. John started playing golf at the age of 44 and retired from his job as an executive in the Print and Packaging industry in 2006 in order to pursue his dream of becoming a Tour Golfer, he set himself a 5 year plan to get his handicap to Scratch and turn Pro and achieved the plan in 18 months.
After winning some 19 times as an Amateur in 2007 and finishing well in both the English and French Mid Amateur Championships he decided to ‘go for it’, in 2008 as a result of what John describes as both positive and negative signs at the end of 2007, he went on to explain ‘I had worked hard on my game all year last year in order to get into the European Seniors Tour qualifying school in Portugal in November, I got in and on the days in question didn’t play to my potential, I had been playing well enough and had good rounds before and after the event, in fact I played and won a friendly the day after Q school against a famous European Tour Player, this led me to conclude that I needed to be playing these top events more frequently in order that they become less important mentally’.
The second and more positive indicator was an offer from local company to sponsor John as a Pro, ‘these 2 factors really made my mind up’, unfortunately since the sponsorship agreement the company in question reluctantly pulled out of the sponsorship due to lack of funds this setback left John with a great plan and no funding, but he decided against all sensible logic to go for the dream anyway and try and fund the expenses from winnings and from letting his Villa out on holiday lets.
John’s playing programme so far has included 3 events on Hi5 tour in Spain in then he will play in play Europro Tour School in the UK in April then on the newly formed European Senior Pro Golf Tour which currently has events planned in Czech Republic, Germany, Spain Ireland and Scotland. He will also play on other selected events dependant on funds and success in the above tournaments.
These tours and events will hopefully be great preparation for John’s main target which is to gain his European Tour Card at the PGA European Seniors Tour School in November, John commented ‘whatever happens this year it’s about building experience and I’m sure the process will help me to come out of the year a better player’.
John plays golf at Hacienda Del Alamo and Director of Golf Billy Sim commented 'John has played some exceptional golf though 2007 here as an Amateur'. (Photo, left, shows John with Miguel Angel Jiménez - promotional face of Hacienda del Alamo).
John still needs some additional Sponsors for the current year in order to meet the considerable travelling expenses involved and sponsorships are available from as little as €500,00 , there are numerous options available in return for Sponsorship including but not limited to attendance at corporate days, teaching, advertising and share in prize money. Alternatively an attachment to an organisation covering all expenses for the year is available for 25,000.
