Spain v Europe 7th & 8th June 2008 – The Day After the Weekend Before!

For the participants of the 2nd Annual Ryder Cup style Tournament, held this year at Roda Golf & Beach Resort, there was little chance of a lie in. The dew was still covering the Golf Course as the players started arriving at 8am but it wouldn’t be long before the heat was turned up, in more ways than one.

Saturday morning, and 92 bleary eyed players embarked on a gruelling but otherwise entertaining weekend of Golf which rekindled some old rivalries, re-acquainted some familiar faces and the golf was pretty good too. If you happened to play for Europe!

The Fourballs started at 09:30 and by then it was clear that this was going to one of the hottest days of the year to date. Half way down the opening holes, players could be heard rejoicing that they were still “All Square”. And with the banter starting early both teams got off to a good start with a number of matches finishing one up after the first hole.

Overall, the morning Fourballs remained in the balance with 13 of the 23 matches still all to play for going down the 17th. By the end of the first session, Europe had established a 4 point advantage going into lunch.

The event, first held last year at La Serena, proved hugely popular. Two new sponsors were involved this year, Estrella De Levante, the Murcia beer company and Chip & Spin, one of the UK brightest Golf Magazines. (Formally, UK Golfer Magazine)

Estrella De Levante in a bid to undermine the Europeans Team (or to provide a boost to the Spanish Team) supplied free beer during the interval and players relaxed on the new Clubhouse terrace before the afternoon Foursomes.

Looking slightly redder than the 8am role call, all the players were back out on the course for the start of the afternoon session.

Editors Note: For those unfortunate players starting on the 7th Par 3 island Green, the events to follow will long remain a closely guarded secret. “Hospitality” and “Signature Hole” clearly don’t mix!

With the advantage of the Fourballs, where one player can pull their team along, in the Foursomes both players had to work well as a pair to secure the points for their team. As in the morning session, 11 matches went down the 17th hole with the matches still alive. In the final analysis, the European Team dominated the afternoon session winning the Foursomes by an impressive 16 points to 7.

Saturday ended with a score of Spain: 16.5, Europe: 29.5

Sunday was as different as it was the same. The mornings weather started slightly overcast which was a relief for the players still half baked from Saturday but the golf was again dominated by the European Team.

Despite 20 matches going down the 17th hole, the European Team again held the advantage in the majority of the matches and the Singles Matches finished 18 to 28 in favour of Europe.

With the sun back up to full strength all the players returned to the more relaxed surroundings of the Clubhouse where players enjoyed the Roda hospitality and Prize Giving Ceremony.

The Director of Golf for Roda Golf & Beach Resort, Pablo Riestra was joined by the two Team Captains, Andres Pintado Paredes and Ivie Davies. Including Juan Martos from the Murcia Golf Association.

Pablo presented the winning European Captain, Ivie Davies with the Trophy who thanked all the players and the organisers for another fantastic weekend.

With the match finally over for another year, players and guests talked about what might have been.
