La Manga Club Footballers Classic

The famous fairways at La Manga Club in Murcia, Spain will once again play host to a glittering array of footballing greats when the 2009 Footballers Classic gets underway on June 6th. La Manga Club have been hosting the annual Footballers Golf Classic since 1996.

This successful event is now in its 13th year (6th-11th June 09), with 40 teams playing annually for the chance to win the coveted title and Green jacket, in a major competition, covered on SKY TV over four days in the wonderful Spanish sunshine.

Addison Lee sponsors of the event since its inception, host the team championship, where teams of three players play for stableford points over three competition rounds. Famous footballing celebrities join the teams, assist and play for an individual score over the three days. Celebrities playing this year and who have joined the Golf Classic on previous occasions include Trevor Brooking, Francis Lee, Steve Bull, Matt Le Tissier, Graeme Sharp, Glenn Hoddle, Liam Brady, David Speedie, Dave Beasant, Gary Owen, Paul Jewell, Sammy Nelson, Mike England, Pat Jennings, Des Walker, Kenny Dalglish, to name but a few.

The individual winner in 2008 was Alan McInally playing off 6. After 8 year’s of going close on a number of occasions, he finally succeeded with a magnificent final round score of 39 points. The “Addison Lee” team championship was won by the team of “Crash Bang Wallop” Paul Woodgate, Stuart Bell and Mark Bauer. Having entered and competed for 10 year’s without winning a prize, they romped away with this year’s championship and became one of the most popular winning teams ever. I have never seen the whole ballroom stand and applaud when the result was announced.

SKY TV broadcast the whole event with all the ups and downs of the competition, with added anecdotes from players and competitors alike.
